I built 4 projects with Bolt.new to understand exactly where it shines and where it falls apart. The answer is nuanced.
What is Bolt.new actually good for?
Landing pages and simple web apps. Bolt.new generates a complete stack in one go — frontend, backend, database. The output is deployable with one click. I built a landing page in 90 minutes that would have taken 4 hours in Cursor. Bolt.new handles the scaffolding perfectly. The limitations show up when you need custom business logic or complex state management.
When should you NOT use Bolt.new?
When your project has auth, payments, or multiple user roles. Bolt.new’s scaffolding works for demo quality but the security and error handling are thin. I needed authentication for one project and spent more time fixing Bolt’s auth implementation than writing it from scratch.
