I tested structured prompts (bullet points, sections) against conversational prompts (paragraphs, questions) for the same coding task. The results were consistent. Here is what to use.
Which prompt style produces better code?
Structured prompts produce better code for complex tasks. Bullet points, sections, and numbered lists help the AI parse your requirements. For simple tasks, conversational prompts work fine. I use structured prompts for anything that touches more than 2 files and conversational prompts for single-line fixes and quick prototypes.
How structured should a structured prompt be?
Three sections is optimal. Context: what the project is. Requirement: exactly what to build. Constraints: what to avoid. More than 3 sections and the AI starts focusing on format over content. I use the same template: Context → Requirement → Constraints. This structure produces reliable output across Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex CLI.
