OpenAI released Codex CLI as a direct competitor to Claude Code. I tested it on the same 5 projects I used for my Claude Code review. Here is the honest comparison.
How does Codex CLI compare to Claude Code?
Codex CLI is faster at one-shot generation — about 30% faster for first-draft code. Claude Code is better at iterative refinement. Codex excels at well-defined tasks: ‘write this function.’ Claude Code excels at open-ended tasks: ‘refactor this module and update all references.’ I use Codex for scaffolding and Claude Code for iteration.
What is Codex CLI weak at?
Multi-step reasoning. When I asked Codex CLI to refactor a file and update all its dependencies, it updated the main file but missed 2 dependent files. Claude Code handles multi-file refactoring more reliably. Codex also struggles with large context windows — it loses coherence after about 50,000 tokens.
