Building mobile apps with AI: Cursor for React Native, Expo for testing

/

AI coding for mobile apps has different constraints than web. The AI does not see the screen. You have to test on real devices. Here is the workflow that works.

Can AI build a production-ready mobile app?

Yes — with React Native and Expo. I built a fitness tracking app with Cursor. The AI generated the navigation, state management with Zustand, health data integration, and chart components. The hardest part was not code — it was testing on iOS and Android simulators. The AI cannot test the UI layout for you.

What mobile app features does AI handle poorly?

Animations, gesture handling, and offline-first architecture. The AI generates functional code but the animations are janky and the gesture handlers miss edge cases. I hand-write the gesture logic and let the AI handle everything else.
