Aider is the open-source terminal AI coding tool that gives you Claude Code-like functionality without the subscription. I used it for 2 weeks to see if it is a viable free alternative.
Is Aider as good as Claude Code?
For simple tasks, yes. Aider handles single-file generation and simple refactoring well. The map of the project structure is useful for context. For complex tasks — multi-file refactoring, deployment scripts — Claude Code is noticeably better. Aider also has fewer guardrails. It will run terminal commands without asking for confirmation.
When would you choose Aider over Claude Code?
When budget matters. Aider is free and open-source. You pay only for API usage — about $5-10/month for moderate use compared to $100/month for Claude Code. For solo projects and learning, Aider is more than sufficient. For production work and client projects, the Claude Code guardrails justify the cost.
