Setting up an AI-friendly knowledge base for your project

/

Your project files are the AI’s memory. If they are disorganized, the AI generates inconsistent code. I spent 3 months refining my project structure for AI readability. Here is the template.

What files should every AI-friendly project have?

CONTEXT.md: project overview, stack, architecture decisions. CLAUDE.md or .cursorrules: AI behavior rules and constraints. SPEC.md: active feature specs. CHANGELOG.md: what changed and why. These files give the AI the full picture. Without them, the AI works in a vacuum and generates files that do not fit the project.

How do you keep the knowledge base up to date?

I update CONTEXT.md and SPEC.md before every AI session. The AI reads these files to understand the current state. After the session, I update CHANGELOG.md with what was done. This keeps the project in a state where a new AI session can start without re-explaining everything.
