Devin was hyped as the first autonomous AI software engineer. I tested it on a real project. The results were mixed. Here is the honest assessment.
Does Devin actually work autonomously?
For well-defined tasks, yes. I gave Devin a spec for a data processing script and it built it without intervention. For open-ended tasks, Devin gets stuck and asks for help. The autonomy is real but limited to narrow scopes. Devin is better described as a very capable assistant that works independently for 20-30 minutes at a time.
When is Devin not the right tool?
When the problem is poorly defined. Devin needs a clear spec. It struggles with anything ambiguous. I gave Devin ‘improve the performance of this API’ and it spent 4 hours making changes that did not help. A human developer would have asked clarifying questions first. Devin is useful for implementing, not for exploring.
