Cursor vs Zed AI: which editor for AI coding in 2026

/

Zed is the new contender in the AI editor space. I used it for 2 weeks to compare with Cursor. Here is where Zed excels and where it falls short.

What does Zed AI do better than Cursor?

Speed. Zed is noticeably faster — it starts up in under a second and the AI completions feel instant. The inline completions are better than Cursor Tab. For rapid single-file edits, Zed is superior. Zed also has a cleaner UI with less visual clutter.

Where does Cursor still beat Zed?

Multi-file refactoring. Zed’s AI context is limited to the current file. Cursor’s Composer understands the entire project. When I needed to refactor a function across 5 files, Cursor handled it in one session. Zed required me to prompt each file separately. Cursor is also better for beginners.
