Databases are where AI shines and fails in equal measure. The AI designs sensible schemas but generates dangerously inefficient queries. Here is the database workflow I use.
How good is AI at designing database schemas?
Surprisingly good for common patterns. I prompted: ‘Design a schema for a SaaS with users, subscriptions, invoices, and usage tracking.’ The AI generated normalized tables with proper foreign keys, indexes, and enum types. The schema was better than what I would write manually. For uncommon patterns, the AI defaults to over-normalized designs.
What database operations should you never trust the AI with?
DELETE and UPDATE without WHERE clauses. The AI sometimes generates ‘DELETE FROM users’ when you meant ‘DELETE FROM users WHERE id = X’. I caught this before running it. Always review database mutations line by line. Automating this guardrail is part of my production readiness checklist.
