Claude Code excels at backend work because it can read your existing API routes and generate consistent new ones. I built an entire payment webhook system with it. Here is the workflow that produces production-ready backend code.
How do you prompt Claude Code for a new API route?
Provide the existing route as context. I use the prompt: ‘Read the file at /api/users/[id].ts and create a similar route for billing at /api/billing/plans.ts following the same error handling, validation, and response format.’ Providing a reference file is more effective than describing the pattern.
How does Claude Code handle database migrations?
It generates both the migration file and the rollback. I prompted: ‘Create a Supabase migration that adds a plans table with columns name, price, interval, features. Also create the rollback migration.’ Claude generated both files with proper up/down functions. I tested the rollback first — it worked. This saved me from the migration accidents I describe in my production guide.
