Building internal tools with Cursor: what I learned from 3 projects

/

Internal tools are the perfect AI coding project. Low stakes, clear requirements, small scope. I built 3 internal tools for different businesses. Here is what I learned.

Why are internal tools ideal for AI coding?

No user-facing polish needed. No SEO concerns. No competitive pressure. The requirements are usually clear: ‘build a dashboard that shows X data from Y source.’ The AI generates the full CRUD app in one session. I built an inventory tracker in 4 hours that a developer quoted at 2 weeks.

What is the most common mistake when building internal tools with AI?

Over-engineering. The AI adds authentication, role management, audit logs, and notification systems to a tool that only 3 people will use. I learned to specify: ‘no auth, no roles, single user. This is an internal tool.’ This cuts the AI output size by 60% and eliminates half the bugs.
