Claude Code’s terminal-native approach makes it ideal for API services. I built a rate-limited API service for a client and tracked every step. Here is the workflow.
How do you structure an API service with Claude Code?
Start with a spec file. I wrote: ‘Create a FastAPI service with 3 endpoints: /users GET POST, /users/{id} GET PUT DELETE. Use SQLite for storage. Add rate limiting: 100 requests/min per IP. Add API key auth.’ Claude Code generated the project structure, models, routes, and middleware in one session. I reviewed and tested each endpoint.
What testing does Claude Code include?
It generated pytest tests for all endpoints, including rate limit testing and auth failure cases. I ran the tests and 8 out of 9 passed. The one failure was a typo in the test. I fixed it in 30 seconds. The test coverage was better than what most junior developers write.
