Claude Code Plan mode: how it maps your project before writing

/

Claude Code has a Plan mode that maps the entire project before writing a single line. I ignored it for 2 weeks. Then I tried it. The quality jump was immediate. Here is how Plan mode works and when to use it.

How does Claude Code Plan mode differ from regular mode?

Plan mode does not write code. It reads your project, analyzes the architecture, and produces a plan. It identifies which files need changes, what the dependencies are, and what the test impact will be. You review the plan and approve it before Claude writes a single line. This catches architecture mistakes before they become bugs.

When should you use Plan mode?

For any task that touches more than 3 files. I use it before adding a new feature, refactoring a module, or migrating a database. It takes 30 seconds to generate the plan and saves hours of debugging. For single-file fixes or small UI changes, skip Plan mode and go directly to Act mode.
